Canadian packaging firm Cascades has unveiled a new polystyrene foam food tray EVOK in North America, designed for packaging of meat, poultry, fish, vegetables and fruits.

The company stated that it has lowered the carbon footprint of food packaging by reducing the use of virgin material in the product and introducing recycled material at a level of 25%.

Cascades Specialty Products Group president and chief operating officer Luc Langevin said polystyrene foam, which is 90% air, provides the company with environmental advantage.

"By replacing the first quarter of the virgin material with recycled materials, Cascades decrease of nearly 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to its traditional trays foam polystyrene," Langevin added.

Cascades, established in 1964, is involved in manufacturing, processing and markets packaging and tissue products composed mainly of recycled fibers.
