An 
annual monitoring programme has been in place for more than 25 years, with no food safety risks identified during this period.Under the current system, the FSA takes samples from and near to all nuclear sites throughout England and Wales. The samples are then tested for radioactivity.
The Agency is now looking to bring the monitoring in line with international scientific guidelines and best practice. The recommendation is to continue the surveillance programme in the same manner, but on a reduced scale. This would maintain consumer safety while moving to a more risk-based approach to monitoring.
Feedback from the 12 week consultation has been received and proposals have been included in a paper for the Agency’s Board to discuss at its meeting on 4 June 2013.
