The Madhya Pradesh government on Thursday 2 June announced the opening of 64 centres across the state for purchasing onion at Rs 6 per kg. The centres will operate from June 4 to 30.The move came after chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on Wednesday that the government will purchase onions at Rs 6 a kg to alleviate farmers' problems, as we reported here.
Chouhan said on that the government will buy farmers' produce under the market intervention scheme (MIS) for perishable goods and decide a minimum support price (MSP) according to the situation.
The state government has promoted MIS for perishable crops and horticulture like onions, potatoes, oranges, grapes, ginger and tomatoes, which are produced in abundance in the state. The government decides MSP of these crops as per market requirements and production.
The government is expecting to purchase 100,000 metric tonnes of onion in the current season.
